Title: Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose: Two Studies (after Sargent)
After: John Singer Sargent, Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose (1885–86)
Medium: Oil on board, two panels
Status: Not for sale, collection of the artist
Two paintings in one frame. One is a study of John Singer Sargent’s Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose at Tate Britain; the other is a painting in his style of a baby delicately picking flowers, just as the girls in the original light their lanterns. I made it into a birthday card. It was one of my favourite paintings to study, and seeing it unexpectedly in the gallery took my breath away.
